At your Hygiene (Cleaning) appointment, we will examine your mouth and teeth. We do this visually and with digital x-rays as needed. Oral cancer screenings are also a very important part of the dental visit. With the advances in modern technology, we are now able to pinpoint the start of potential problems much earlier. The ability to do so is extremely important in being able to treat any issues prior to them becoming a major irreversible problem. Certain lifestyle choices can have a great impact on the health of tissues and your overall health in the mouth. You should be careful with sweets, soda and especially energy drinks. If you are a smoker or use alcohol, please be sure to have regular oral cancer screenings by your dentist.
It is also important to note that if your metabolic health changes, the gum tissues are often the first to notice the change. Poor dietary choices effect your susceptibility to decay.
If you have had surgery to lace an artificial joint or prosthesis, you should ask your orthopedic physician if premedication with antibiotics is indicated to reduce the risks of infection around the prosthesis. There are general guidelines for premedication, but your physician may wish to stress your particular needs differently. It never hurts you to consult with your surgeon and get a written recommendation about pre-medication.
