Periodontal Health

Periodontal (Gum) Treatment

Your teeth are not the only important part of your mouth. Your gums and the bone underneath them are essential to great oral health as well. Often plaque and tartar can accumulate below the gum line. This can be one of the reasons for loss of bone and eventual tooth loss if this is not managed carefully.  It's very important to have your dentist check this area, especially if you have bleeding during brushing.

When the bone is compromised there is often a deeper space between the tooth and gum tissues.  We can provide more involved periodontal cleanings and specialty treatment when indicated.  This is often called root planning or curettage. With this scenario, we clean and smooth this area of the root with special instruments to ensure that the area is free of debries. If this area is not kept clean the adjacent gum tissues can become irritated with the bacteria that resides in the tartar and plaque.   Bad Breath can also be a concern if there is this problem.

Periodontal disease is a systemic problem which can effect your entire body. The inflammation of the tissues is the same as the inflammation that occurs in the blood vessels of patients with heart disease.  It can weaken or stress your body.    Please let us know if you have any questions. We often can impact this problem with treatment,  We can also refer you to one of our recommended specialists if necessary.  Our goal is to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime.
